ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday afternoon that the Denver Broncos are hiring Sean Payton to replace Nathaniel Hackett as the franchise's head coach.
Payton is still under contract with the New Orleans Saints which means the Broncos have to trade for the former Super Bowl-winning head coach.
According to Schefter, the Saints had their pick of two trade packages from the Broncos.
Package A:
- The Broncos give a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick for Payton and the Saints' 2024 third-round pick
Package B:
- Denver gives their 2024 first-round pick and a 2023 fourth-round pick for Payton.
According to Schefter, the Saints chose package A.
That means that Payton and the Broncos won't have a draft pick in 2023 until the third round (they don't have a second-round pick, either).
It's a hefty price to pay for a head coach, but after struggling this past season under Hackett, I'm not sure there's a price that's too much for a quality head coach.
Denver got their guy and fans should be excited, regardless of how much it cost.
