Broncos’ Sean Payton doesn’t hold back with fiery postgame message after Week 6 victory
Quite the response from head coach Sean Payton.
The Denver Broncos squeaked away a victory against the New York Jets in Week 6, 13-11.
It wasn’t the best day at the office for quarterback Bo Nix and the Broncos’ offense, with a third quarter that saw Denver completely abandon its identity.
Despite that, the defense showed up in a big way, something head coach Sean Payton emphasized in his postgame comments. Immediately after the game, Payton was honest about the contest and acknowledged that he needs to improve as a coach going forward.
“We’re going to look at the tape, we’re going to be upset about the pre-snap fouls, the holding, false start on a third and one,” Payton said. “I think there’s going to be a number of things that we’re going to look at that we’re going to have to clean up with.”
That’s when Payton took accountability for the offense’s lackluster performance and self-inflicted wounds committed throughout the contest. He knows that the coaching staff needs to be better after a way-too-close-for-comfort victory.
“Obviously, that starts with me and our coaching staff,” Payton added. “I felt the same way in the kicking game. I felt we lost that battle, and fortunately, our defense played well enough for us to get the win.”
Denver’s defense wreaked havoc on Justin Fields
The defense had nine sacks during the contest, making life difficult for Justin Fields and the New York Jets offense. Denver leads the league in sacks, with no signs of slowing down. Fields finished his day going nine-for-17 with 45 yards while adding seven carries for 31 yards.
The Broncos’ defense opened and closed the game by shutting down Fields and the Jets’ offense. Late in the contest, Fields had a chance to march down the field for a game-winning field goal, but the Broncos’ defense would not be denied.
Payton gave his flowers to the defense, which only allowed 82 yards of total offense.
“Nine sacks, you don’t really hear of negative 20 yards passing, so that’s a little unusual,” Payton said. “I think they had 80-something yards total offense; our defense was outstanding today.”
Linebacker Nik Bonitto continued on his impressive early showings, bringing down Fields for yet another sack and firmly in the race for Defensive Player of the Year.
Bonitto and company held Fields and the Jets’ offense to two-for-15 on third down conversions while only allowing eight first downs throughout the entire contest.
Payton was open and honest about the struggles the team faced, and he hopes it will fuel them to great things moving forward.
A win is a win, and the Broncos are now sitting atop the AFC West after the victory in London: plenty to clean up, but plenty to be excited about for Broncos Country.
