Broncos’ Sean Payton fires a sneaky jab at Russell Wilson seconds after stunning comeback win
Not what fans were expecting to hear from Sean Payton after the game.
The Denver Broncos were part of one of the greatest games of the young NFL season, coming back to win 33-32 over the New York Giants.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton threw some shade at his former quarterback, Russell Wilson, seconds after the victory. It was subtle, but his message quickly spread across social media.
The majority of Payton’s messaging focused on the fight that the team displayed, emphasizing how special it was to do so in front of the Super Bowl 50 alumni, especially on a night honoring legendary wide receiver Demaryius Thomas. It wasn’t pretty, but the team dug deep and pulled out the victory.
Payton was quick to signal his support for Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart; he hoped the team would have waited until after the Broncos’ game to give Dart the start, suggesting that Payton would much rather have taken on Wilson instead.
“I have a ton of respect for that organization. I spent four of my early years there coordinating, Super Bowl, first game in this stadium before 9/11, close with the Mara and Tisch family,” Payton said. “They found a little spark with that quarterback [Dart]. I was talking to John Mara not too long ago, and I said we were hoping that the change would’ve happened long after our game.”
An improbable victory for the Broncos
Denver had zero points heading into the fourth quarter before quarterback Bo Nix put the team on his back, scoring two passing and two rushing touchdowns in the comeback.
Nix was electric in the fourth, finishing 27 of 50 for 279 yards and four total touchdowns. His two biggest targets were receivers Marvin Mims Jr. and Courtland Sutton, each finishing with six receptions.
As for Dart, it’s clear to see why Payton might’ve preferred Wilson. Dart was giving the Denver defense issues nearly all game, finishing his day going 15-for-33 with 283 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. He also added five carries for 11 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
It was a night of tributes and turning points. For Payton, it was yet another reminder that the Broncos have long since turned the page from the Wilson chapter. As for Nix and the offense, it was yet another reminder that no game is fully out of reach for this Broncos unit.
