The Denver Broncos coach wants to win, plain and simple.
"It's the salve for the whole organization. Makes everyone feel better."
Payton has gone viral with an explosive interview in which he dissected the former regime, Russell Wilson, and opened up to the world on what is going to be different moving forward with Broncos football.
"I'm going to be pissed off if this is not a playoff team."
Something that all Broncos fans can get behind and a precursor for what was to come in his most open and honest interview to date.
While the division runs through Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes, Payton is showing that he won't be backing down from any challenge and he's ready to take the league by storm. When speaking on the disaster that was last season, Payton was direct.
“It doesn’t happen often where an NFL team or organization gets embarrassed,” He continued, "That happened here. Part of it was their own fault, relative to spending so much (expletive) time trying to win the offseason – the PR, the pomp and circumstance, marching people around and all this stuff."
Payton, referring back to the previous regime that was for lack of a better term, a dumpster fire, pointed out how they hadn't done Russell Wilson any favors. Specifically, the challenges that they are currently facing as the franchise quarterback looks to bounce back from one of the worst statistical seasons in his entire career.
“Man, we ran that kid through the car wash a hundred times now,” Payton continued, sharing the wise sentiment of Hall of Fame coach, and mentor, Bills Parcells.
“But that’s a storyline, though. How is this going to look? How’s it going to work? You know what? We’re fixing to find out. As Bill would say.”
Almost speaking directly to Nathaniel Hackett and anyone who may be doubting Wilson, Payton had a message for the world.
"There’s 20 dirty hands, for what was allowed, tolerated in the fricking training rooms, the meeting rooms. The offense. I don’t know Hackett. A lot of people had dirt on their hands. It wasn’t just Russell. He didn’t just flip. He still has it. This B.S. that he hit a wall? Shoot, they couldn’t get a play in. They were 29th in the league in pre-snap penalties on both sides of the ball."
With all of the offseason drama and controversy surrounding Wilson, from his perceived diva-ish ways of running the show, having his own office, teammates reportedly having to schedule a meeting with his assistant, bringing in his own guys instead of the team's coaches, Payton was direct that it wasn't necessarily Wilson's fault.
A huge culture shift is taking place in Denver as Payton is showing the world that he's the new sheriff in town. Things are going to be drastically different next season. Whether that will result in more wins remains to be seen, but Payton isn't going to go insane by doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
Payton, with another parting shot at Hackett and anyone doubting this team, gave the world one of the best quotes before a single snap has been played.
"It’s not just Russell. It was a (poor) offensive line. It might have been one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL. That’s how bad it was."
Right now, this is exactly what the fanbase and the organization need. No bull from their head coach as they try and pull a 180 and bring the winning ways back to Denver.
However, if the team crashes and burns, this interview will quickly and undoubtedly come back to bite him. For now, Broncos fans are ready to run through a brick wall, and we can't blame them.
Sean Payton already making one major change for Broncos QB Russell Wilson
There was one major takeaway from today's introductory press conference for new Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton. Change. Change is own the horizon inside the building for the Broncos. Their players will feel it, and fans will probably be happy to hear all of this after last season's debacle with Nathaniel Hackett. One of […]
