Denver Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton riled up the fans earlier this week with talks of a Super Bowl. Payton spoke to the media, expressing his belief that this current roster has what it takes to raise the Lombardi trophy, even linking them to his previous Super Bowl winning team, the 2009 New Orleans Saints.

In 17 years in the league, Payton has 170 wins and 105 losses. For his tenure with Denver specifically, Payton has 34 wins and 18 losses as a head coach. With 270+ games as head coach, and a Super Bowl to boot, he’s been around the league.

With his experience, Payton has had the fortune of having some Hall of Fame-level guys play for him. From Drew Brees to Jimmy Graham, Payton went viral when asked about his former teams and which one player he would like to add to the current Broncos offense.

Immediately following practice, Dianna Russini had guest Chase Daniel on Scoop City and got a telling response from the head coach, and it wasn’t a player either of them was initially thinking. From the interview, it wasn’t even who Payton was initially thinking, either.

Russini began, “I wonder if there’s a player that he could just have on any one of his teams moving forward. Who is it?” Payton, without skipping a beat, “Alright, so the question is, who is my favorite player?”

The Broncos head coach was immediately corrected, “It’s not who your favorite player is. No, no, no, no, no! I got favorite people in my life, but they’re not the best at what they do.”

Payton interjected, “There are so many Jimmy Grahams, Shockeys, Breeses.”

Chase Daniel exploded, thinking that he nailed his pick, “The first guy I said!”

Payton was quick to shut it down and give them an answer they weren’t expecting: “That’s not the answer. I’m giving you honorable mentions. So happy because he retired this year. But I think there was something about frickin Darren Sproles.”

Adam Holt, beat reporter for the New Orleans Saints for A To Z Sports, had a thing or two to say about Payton’s response, and we can’t agree more. When asked about why he believes Sproles was the pick, Holt didn’t hold back.

“Darren Sproles’ value to Sean Payton in New Orleans can be attributed to many aspects of his game on and off the gridiron.

Sproles’ versatility is what stood out the most to me, though. As an undersized back, Sproles was never afraid of contact and always worked hard in pass protection, a trait that offensive coaches love in the NFL.

Keep in mind – he was listed at 5’6 & 190 pounds. Not to mention, his receiving and return ability at his position were elite amongst his NFL peers. He was truly a jitterbug out of the backfield and a terror when returning kicks. With Payton in New Orleans, Sproles had at least 600 receiving yards in every season and even totaled 86 (!!) catches in 2011 in his offense.”

Sproles on this current offense would be terrifying; it’s not hard to see why Payton had him as his first potential choice.
