During the first few days of free agency, when the Denver Broncos were sitting idle while other teams made big moves, there were numerous reminders of head coach Sean Payton’s comments about trades and free agency from two years ago.

The comments Payton made in 2024 were about free agency and trades, and how there’s more to moves than most fans, including his own brother, realize.

“My brother’s the worst at this,” said Payton. “He’s the worst at free agency, and he’s the worst at the trade deadline. He just wants to see action. Then right after the action takes place, he never goes back and reflects and says, ‘Well that was a bad signing,’ or, ‘That was a bad trade.’ I say that — I kid him — but I think that there’s so much more that goes into it relative to whether you’re trading a player [or] acquiring a player.

“Contracts go into it, vision goes into it and locker room goes into it. There are a lot of details that go into that. To answer your question fairly, I’m sitting here with the numbers right now with Kansas City, the depth chart, injury report and scouting report. [I] kind of finished up on Baltimore. Our players are in meetings on Baltimore. That’s where we’re at.”

Those comments would seemingly suggest that Payton was relaxed as the Broncos were getting hammered by the national media and much of the fan base for sitting out the first week of free agency.

Payton, however, revealed this week that that wasn’t the case.

The longtime NFL head coach admitted to Kay Adams that “free agency was tough”.

Things ended up working out just fine for the Broncos as the franchise swung a trade with the Miami Dolphins to acquire wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.

(Payton also tried his hand at Waddle’s famous celebration in the video above.)

Still, even if Payton and the Broncos had that move in their back pocket, we all know that nothing is done in the NFL until it’s done (just ask Maxx Crosby).

So it’s understandable that Payton feels like free agency was “tough” despite the fact the Broncos stuck to their plan the entire time.

You just never know how moves may play out in the NFL.
