The feeling going into free agency was that the Denver Broncos would sign a “premier” running back with the top options being Kenneth Walker III and Travis Etienne.

Denver, however, didn’t sign a “top” running back option. Instead, they re-signed running back JK Dobbins to a two-year deal worth $20 million with $8 million in guaranteed money.

Dobbins, who is 27, is a very productive player when healthy (he averaged 5.0 yards per carry last season in Denver)

But staying healthy hasn’t been easy for the former Ohio State Buckeyes standout — Dobbins has missed 27 games over the last three seasons.

Despite the injury concerns, The Athletic feels that re-signing Dobbins was a solid move for the Broncos, giving the deal a “B-“.

“Dobbins is indeed a talented back,” noted The Athletic’s Mike Jones. “He has a good feel, good vision and patience. But injuries have always limited his production. He has yet to play a full season, which means he’s not the most dependable. Last season, he recorded 809 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns and, despite playing in only 10 games, his 772 rushing yards also led the Broncos.”

The Broncos will likely still look for another running back to add to the roster to join Dobbins and RJ Harvey, via either free agency or the draft.

Running back Alvin Kamara, who played under Sean Payton for five seasons, looms as an interesting option after the New Orleans Saints agreed to a deal with Travis Etienne.
