The Denver Broncos are approaching the Tuesday roster cut-down date, where they must cut it from 80 to 53 players. There are some really good players on this team that won't end up making the initial 53-man roster, but they can still show out for other teams who may be watching.
The Broncos have several players that will end up being great depth pieces for the team this season, and Saturday is where we will likely figure out who those guys are after watching their play.
Here are three players on the Broncos' defense that can solidify their spot on the roster Saturday against the Minnesota Vikings.
Ja'Quan McMillian, CB
To be honest, there are so many good defensive backs on this roster that it was hard to choose. I'm not 100% sure that McMillian will make this roster, but his play Saturday will likely get him a roster spot on another team.
In the preseason he has done fine, But in training camp, we have heard nothing but great things. I think Saturday he will show some of that against a group of backup quarterbacks in Mannion and Mond that are not very good, maybe even Mullens, too.
Essang Bassey, CB
According to Ourlads.com, a site that gives depth chart projections, Bassey is currently listed as the fourth receiver behind Surtain, Darby, and Williams.
I think if he plays well on Saturday, Bassey will have that fourth spot locked in. However, it's a tight race at the position, so he has to play well. Bassey will need to show he can play great man coverage, while also not allowing a whole lot of space and separation. If he does that, he's a lock.
Matt Henningsen, DE
Henningsen was able to get to the quarterback once in the Broncos' first preseason matchup against the Cowboys. He has had a great training camp and a good preseason so far. Even last game against the Buffalo Bills Henningsen was able to do some things defensively.
Against Buffalo, he didn't quite have the numbers on the stat sheet, but he did constantly put pressure on the offensive line. He can't be taken lightly, which is why I think he will be pretty good against the Vikings.
Here is why I think his play will validate him getting a roster spot. The Broncos will likely keep six total edge rushers, and there are currently six right now. But if there was one to be cut, it's probably McTelvin Agim. And honestly, Henningsen has done more than Agim so far this preseason.
