Don't mess with Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton.
When Payton was brought in, you could feel that things would be different for the organization. While there hasn't been a single snap played with Payton as the head coach, there's a buzz in the city about Broncos football.
Let's be honest, things can't get much worse than last season. However, one of Payton's former players has opened up and has a message for anyone doubting Payton and his abilities: don't.
Former New Orleans Saints running back and now Denver Bronco Tony Jones, Jr. was brought in by the front office to add depth, but also a familiar face. Payton has been bringing in what feels like everyone from his past in his new journey in Denver.
Jones spent time with Payton for two of his first three seasons in New Orleans after going undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2020 and then being picked up by New Orleans. The physical downhill runner, since joining the league, has amassed 163 yards on 59 carries with no touchdowns.
Jones opened up about some conversations he has been having with his current teammates. "Guys asked, ‘Is Sean kind of like a rah-hah coach? Was he going to work guys harder?’’’ Jones's response is sure to make his new head coach smile. "I would tell them, ‘Sean’s going to work you but Sean’s also going to give you the time and tools to recover. Sean’s a smart guy, and he’s going to put us in the right spot to win.”’
While Jones has his work cut out for him as it appears, today, he would be the RB3 on the roster while trying to compete with undrafted rookie and college legend Jaleel McLaughlin and Tyler Badie, the organization gave him a prove-it type deal. The one-year, $940k salary will need to be earned. With Jones going undrafted and fighting every day for a chance to make it in the league, don't count him out.
