The Detroit Lions’ off-season is in full swing right now, and this team is expected to have a much more productive offseason than ever before when it comes to player acquisition.

With that in mind, many people are discussing the same positions. Mostly edge rusher, offensive line, and maybe a safety. Those are understandable, but there are a few other positions the Lions may be looking to fill that you’re not even thinking about. These are those positions:

Quarterback

There are two ways to look at this. The first way is that the Lions may want to jump into this really good quarterback draft and walk out with their guy of the future. You can’t rule that out.

The other side is that Kyle Allen is a free agent, and Hendon Hooker is gone. The Lions just flat need a backup quarterback. They may go to the draft and just knock both of these out at the same time.

Running back

At the start of the season, this one was always kind of in the back of your head due to the way David Montgomery’s contract was structured. But I can’t say I thought they’d actually go through it.

At least not for another year. But now it’s looking like a Montgomery trade is possible, and if that happens, the search for an RB2 will be on, assuming the Lions don’t want to give that spot to Sione Vaki.

Defensive tackle

This is the one I’m probably the least sure about. DJ Reader is probably done in Detroit. I’m sure the Lions would like Roy Lopez back, but he’s a free agent. So who knows? Alim McNeill really struggled after coming back from a torn ACL.

So, that leaves Tyleik Williams, who had a good rookie year, and some depth players. Don’t forget that both Levi Onwuzurike and Josh Paschal are probably gone, too. Investments need to be made here, either in the draft or free agency. They also have to hope McNeill rebounds.

Kicker

I don’t know if this necessarily means the Lions will part ways with Jake Bates after a down year, but some competition at training camp never hurt anyone.

The truth is that kicker is probably the hardest position to find these days. That’s why when you have a guy who is even remotely good, you need to hang on to him.
