The Detroit Lions responded and responded big with a 52-21 win against the Chicago Bears at Ford Field on Sunday. We’ve got four winners and 10 losers from this game.
Winners
Jared Goff
Goff had a very strong game, completing 82.1% of his passes for 334 yards and five touchdowns. It was truly one of the best games of his career after a week of many people saying that Goff couldn’t survive without Ben Johnson or Sean McVay. Turns out he can do that and more.
Amon-Ra St. Brown
If this game felt visibly personal to anyone, it was St. Brown. Right off the bat, he came out of the corner swinging and looking for knock-out shots. He landed a few.
He ended the day with nine catches for 115 yards and three touchdowns. It was just an absolute answer to everyone who thought this offense and this team were done for.
Brian Branch
After the game, Branch told the media that he felt betrayed by Ben Johnson leaving the Lions and going to the Bears. He must have felt it a lot personally because he went for it in this game.
Branch finished the day with two forced fumbles, a sack, a TFL, and six tackles. He left the game a little early, but don’t be concerned. It was just a cramp, according to the safety.
Aidan Hutchinson
Hutchinson came out and had a much better game after a quiet day against the Packers. He wound up with five pressures and a sack. He could have had two sacks, but Caleb Williams somehow got loose on one of those.
Again, not to beat a dead horse, but the concerns have pretty much gone now, right?
Losers
Terrion Arnold
This is not because Arnold had a bad game. He just had a bad moment where he caught his first career interception and celebrated it like the monumental career moment that it is, and then it was taken away from him moments later because Branch got called for roughing the passer. Branch said he owes Arnold after the game. I suggest he buy him some dinner and then help him get that interception in Week 3.
Quick Losers
- Dan Orlovsky: Come on, Dan, the Lions offense is the thing you’re most concerned about? Over the Dolphins?
- Peter Schrager: On Sunday morning, Peter thought he did something when he went on ESPN and talked about Goff’s record without Johnson and McVay. A record that includes seven games in his rookie season on a really bad Rams team and then the Lions’ 2021 season. These narratives are getting out of hand.
- Some fans who wanted John Morton fired: Seven days ago, you would have thought that this team had just lost its 10th game in a row and that it hadn’t scored a point in those 10 games. Then, they dropped a 50 burger
- First Take: for saying that Dan Campbell is the team’s problem. Are you kidding me?
- ESPN Bet: For favoring the Bears by nearly a touchdown.
- Me: Because I’m probably not going to have a good fantasy team this year. Not even Gibbs and Jamo’s day can save me.
- This Twitter account that will never live this moment down:
Marcus Davenport
You just feel bad for the guy at this point. He worked so hard this offseason and played a good game, but then he went out with two separate injuries. One was a shoulder and the other was an ankle.
He just can’t seem to catch a break. He iced his shoulder in the locker room after the game and said he didn’t know what the deal was. We’ll see what happens during the week.
Fans chanting “expletive Ben Johnson”
I’m not trying to virtue signal or whatever you kids call being a nice guy these days, but this was just uncalled for. Yes, Johnson went to the enemy, and I totally get it. It feels like a betrayal.
But this guy helped the Lions reach heights they haven’t been to in most of our lives, and to turn around and chant that at him just felt like sore winning and in bad taste. The players feel the same way about that. They wanted to beat Ben, but they didn’t want that.

Turns out the Lions good players are good no matter who coaches them, 7 other big takeaways from 52-21 win
Well, that is definitely how you answer. All the reactions to Week 1 just feel pretty silly after the Lions’ dominant 52-21 win over the Bears. Let’s just jump right into the big takeaways. Lions’ offense doesn’t look too different without Ben Johnson All week, that’s what you heard from people from far outside of […]
