The offseason is carrying on. The Detroit Lions are about to report to mandatory minicamp on Tuesday and we could get a glimpse at what the team plans to do with players. The big question today is do the Lions plan to change the position of any of those players? It certainly seems like they do based off things we've seen already.
There could be more moving around this year than any other year before. There's multiple players that could be on the move to other positions. Here's 5 that could be playing a whole new role in 2024.
Brian Branch
Branch is the biggest one of them all. It would appear he's heading over to the safety position. This is where he was at Alabama and this is the position that got him drafted.
The Lions put him in the nickel out of necessity, but that didn't mean that was his final home. It seems the plan is to have rookie Ennis Rakestraw play there. The Lions have been working him there since rookie minicamp.
Heading over to safety and being a starter is a huge shift in the position for the Lions. He would work so well with Ifeatu Melifonwu and Kerby Joseph.
Colby Sorsdal
It looks like the experiment of Sorsdal playing guard is over and the Lions are moving him back to tackle. That's where he had always played before. So he's going somewhere he has experience.
Sorsdal could very well be the future for the Lions at one of the tackle spots. Most likely at right tackle. That's assuming that once Taylor Decker is gone, the Lions move Sewell to the left side where he's shown to be be very good.
Malcolm Rodriguez
Rodriguez is likely to be a multiple position guy. The Lions are kind of stacked at linebacker at this point and he's the low man there. But that doesn't mean he won't do anything.
We know he can play on special teams, but the other spot the Lions experimented with him at last year was fullback. Since the Lions didn't go out and sign a new one this year or bring back Jason Cabinda, it would appear they'll look to do that again in 2024.
The big benefit here is that the Lions can have a fullback while not having to have a roster spot for one.
Parker Hesse
This could be an interesting one. Hesse has been a tight end in the NFL since he came into the league in 2019. He was tight end at Iowa as well. But he was also a pretty decent edge rusher at Iowa too.
The Lions have so many tight ends on the roster right now. Sam LaPorta, Brock Wright, Shane Zylstra, James Mitchell, Sean McKeon and Hesse. It's not crazy to think that at least one of those guys is here, too, maybe in a different spot.
This is an opportunity to move Hesse back to the defensive side of the ball and see what you've got there. It's actually kind of strange that no team has done this already. With Terrell Williams on staff, the Lions have the perfect defensive linemen coach to try it with.
Graham Glasgow
This one isn't super trivial. He'll be moving from right guard to left guard since Kevin Zeitler is a Pro Bowl right guard and said at his press conference back in March that the Lions plan to have him play right guard.
4 Lions that must make a good impression at minicamp this week
On Tuesday the Detroit Lions will report to mandatory minicamp. It's a big week for every player on the team and it will be the firs time that we'll get to see some of the new guys like DJ Reader report and mix it up with his new teammates. This is also a time to […]
