The cuts are done around the NFL, but roster building is not. Now it's time to go to the waiver wire and see what you can get. There's some real one man's trash is another man's treasure type targets that are available. We've got five guys the Lions could try to put a claim in on.

Before we get to those players, we should say that it could be difficult for the Lions to win on some claims since they're pretty low in the order. Since it's using the same order as the first round of the 2024 NFL draft, the Lions are almost near the bottom. Still, they could try for these guys here and if nobody claims them, they could potentially be signed as free agents.

WR Isaiah Hodgins

I mean, this is the top one to keep your eyes on this week. The Lions are in need of a big bodied receiver that can play the X role and here he is. This also happens to be a guy that Brad Holmes and the team's scouting department just spent an entire week watching in practice and a preseason game. Hodgins could come in and play that Josh Reynolds role and do it pretty well, he just couldn't overtake any of the receivers in New York.

DT Siaki Ika

Sort of cheating on this one. I don't really think the Lions should put in a claim on this guy. But I do think they should immediately sign him to their practice squad. Maybe it's a personal thing. I was a big fan of Ika coming out of the draft last year, but it really didn't work in Cleveland. Maybe with the coaching of Terrell Williams, the Lions could get Ika to a place where he can be a contributor in the future. It's worth a look.

WR Hakeem Butler

I've been on the Butler thing for a while. The UFL's Offensive Player of the Year just got waived by the Bengals and is now available again. Maybe it's one of those "I can fix him" type things. I just truly believe he's had the worst luck in the NFL and that Detroit is good spot for him to finally flourish. Another guy that's a big bodied contested catch type receiver.

Edge Breeland Speaks

Another UFL guy. This one was the Defensive Player of the Year and he won that award here in Detroit playing for the Michigan Panthers. Speaks can play a solid depth role that John Cominsky would have played before the injury. It would be worth it to give him a shot.

WR Terrace Marshall, Jr.

The former second-round pick is the odd man out Carolina after they drafted Xavier Legette and signed Diontae Johnson. He has yet to find success there, but he's also gone through multiple head coaches, coordinators and quarterbacks. Stability is what he might need to succeed.
