8 takeaways from the Lions win over the Saints
The Detroit Lions just don't make it easy do they? They make you go through all the emotions possible before they do enough to come out with a 33-28 win. I don't care how ugly it is. A win is a win. As always, I have thoughts on this game. These are those thought's: Samuel […]
The Detroit Lions just don't make it easy do they? They make you go through all the emotions possible before they do enough to come out with a 33-28 win. I don't care how ugly it is. A win is a win.
As always, I have thoughts on this game. These are those thought's:
Samuel Joseph LaPorta
You might get sick of me saying this every week, but this is just not normal what LaPorta is doing right now. He's a rookie tight end. NFL history tells you that he's supposed to struggle. He's not doing that. He's instead really helping this team. He had five catches for 68 yards and a touchdown in the first half alone.
Then in the second half he kept things going with a big 48 yard catch in the third quarter and another big catch in the fourth quarter. LaPorta finished the day with nine catches, on nine targets, for 140 yards and a touchdown. This kid is headed to Pro Bowl for sure.
Goff Report
Don't have any complaints for Goff in this one. Actually I'm going to commend him for making the big time plays when the Lions needed the big time plays. Especially his final pass of the game with the Saints defense all over him. Goff went full Michael Jordan in Space Jam to make this throw happen.
Goff finished the day going 16-25 for 213 yards and two touchdowns. Most importantly, he didn't commit any turnovers.
Defense
The Lions defense started off so well. They forced a turnover and followed it up with multiple punts. It looked like the unit was finally back on track. Then the Saints rattled off big play after big play and before you knew it, they were right back in the game.
Ultimately the Lions defense was able to get stops when they needed them and they were able to force two turnovers, but they just need to make sure that they're not constantly putting themselves in these situations. You just can't allow a team back in it like that. Let's see how they do in Chicago next week.
Super Jamo
This is why you have Jameson Williams on this team. That speed is insane. That play happened so fast and there was just no catching Williams on this one. Then we learned that he could fly at the end of the play. For a moment I thought he might fly out of the Superdome and meet the team back in Detroit.
Jack Campbell
Jack Campbell must have heard the comments about his play because he had a very good game with the green dot on Sunday. Campbell racked eight tackles and had three tackles for a loss. What do you do with Campbell going forward with Anzalone coming back? It's clear he needs to be playing in his own position more down the stretch.
Bruce Irvin
Bruce Irvin made his Lions debut in Sunday and the 36-year-old wasted very little time before he got himself on the board with his first sack of the season. You love to see if you're a Lions fans. We'll see if Irvin can continue to help the Lions pass rush in the next five games. This was a good start.
Unfortunately Irvin would get called for a bad roughing the passer call in the fourth quarter. The call allowed the Saints to score.
Save some tackles for everyone else Jalen
I have always been a big fan of Jalen Reeves-Maybin and games like this are why. The special teams captain made nearly every special teams tackle for the Lions on Sunday. Wherever the ball is, Reeves-Maybin is there. If you ever wondered why he's the captain, you got that answer on Sunday.
Shuffle
Look at David Montgomery out here doing the Ickey Shuffle like Bengals legend Ickey Woods. Montgomery finished the day with 56 yards and a touchdown.
