The Detroit Lions made what can only be categorized as a shocking move if you’ve been at training camp or paid any attention to this team when they waived sixth-round pick Ahmed Hassanein with an injury settlement on Tuesday.

The reality is that this was a calculated risk by the Lions. The idea being that after a season full of injuries, the Lions don’t want to use one of their IR-to-return spots this early into the season. Hassanein is slated to miss some time this season, but it’s unknown if this is a season-ending injury. This move helps the Lions keep their options open because they essentially get him off the roster without having to use one of those spots.

The risk, though, is that Hassnein would have to hit the waiver wire, and another team could claim him, leaving the Lions to lose out on a player they like. But that’s not what happened. Hassanein went unclaimed on the waiver wire and now reverts back to the Lions.

So what happens next? The Lions have two choices. They have five days to offer an injury settlement to Hassanein, in which they would pay him for the number of games he’s expected to miss, and then release him. He can sign with any team in the league except for the Lions at that point. They could also do nothing, and Hassanein heads to IR. I’m thinking it probably will be the latter choice, right? Obviously.

This was a smart move by the Lions, albeit a risky one, but it ultimately paid off. We’ll see soon enough if he returns this year or if it’s something that the Lions will have to wait until next year for.
