Last year half the NFL became captivated with this kid in Canada named Giovanni Manu. The size and athletcism was super apparent and that's why so many team's had him in for workouts and so many team's had him in for wourkouts and the Detroit Lions felt they had to trade up to get him.
Everyone knew that this was going to be a project for whoever drafted him since he's relatively new to football, but it's one of those projects that has a super high payoff. Manu took a redshirt year with the Lions and didn't play at all, but the reports out of Allen Park were that he had been getting better and better.
On Tuesday, we got to catch up with Lions head coach Dan Campbell at the League Meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, and while answering a question about Graham Glasgow, he might have spilled a possibility for Manu.
"Man, we've talked about that you go back to right, you know? And is it Mahogany left? Is it somebody we drafted? You're gonna do your best to let these guys compete and see where they're at. I mean, do we try Manu at guard? That's a thought, you know. So we're gonna try to let these guys compete a little bit and move them around and see what's right."
Manu at guard, man that would be a very large and athletic guard. It's not something that we haven't heard before either. When Manu was drafted, TSN Broadcaster Farhan Lalji told us that he was told the Lions initially had Manu penciled in at right guard when he first got there. So it's something that's been on their minds for some time now.
We're going to see what the Lions do with Manu relatively soon when OTA's and minicamp get started up. It should be interesting to see if this opens things up for the Lions to draft a tackle later this month. If they feel that guard is better for him, they could look for their eventual Taylor Decker replacement now.
