Dan Campbell’s comments confirm suspicions on Hendon Hooker and the status of the Lions’ backup quarterback battle

The Hall of Fame game was not a good night for the Detroit Lions and both of their backup quarterbacks. Kyle Allen went 9-14 for 92 yards and two interceptions, and Hendon Hooker had an even worse night, going 3-6 for 18 yards and an interception.
Since Allen’s first pick of the game against the Chargers, Lions fans have been asking why Hendon Hooker didn’t get the start in this game, and why does it appear that Kyle Allen is the Lions’ choice at QB2 right now? Well, he’ not at this time. Neither is Hooker. This battle is still very much ongoing and Campbell’s comments on Sunday confirm that.
The thing is that these guys have been switching who plays with the second team every day. Neither man has taken the lead on this thing yet. There were suspicions that the alternating could extend to the preseason games, and we’d see one guy start one week and the other guy start the next week. Dan Campbell confirmed that suspicion on Sunday when he said that he sees Hendon Hooker starting against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night and Kyle Allen playing in the second half. He also talked about how both guys are very aware they had bad nights.
“I can tell you both of those guys are, you know, it goes without saying, they’re frustrated with the way that went, and they both want to improve and get better, and they will.”
At the end of the day, the Lions are two weeks into training camp. This thing wasn’t going to be solved right away. Despite what looked like a really bad game, there were some positives to take away for both guys. Allen had some nice throws both on the run and in the pocket, and Hooker’s mobility saved him on multiple snaps. We just need to see them out with that kind of stuff together for full halves of football.
If they both go out and lay eggs in the second preseason game, you have to wonder what the Lions do at the position going forward, because right now, nobody is safe and nobody has the job. If it’s bad again, then what do you do?
