Dan Skipper could soon return to the Detroit Lions…sort of
The fan favorite could return to the Detroit Lions, just not on the field.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Detroit Lions tackle Dan Skipper announced that he was retiring from the NFL. The fan favorite spent eight seasons as the Lions’ swing tackle and stood in at left and right tackle as well as guard on occasion. He was someone Lions fans did not want to see go.
Well, there’s a way that he can come back now. But not to play on the field.
Lions could hire Dan Skipper for their newly opened assistant offensive line coach job
As we know, Skippers’ planned next move in life was to become a coach. He started that plan the day after announcing his retirement by heading to Dallas to coach offensive linemen at the East-West Shrine Bowl.
On Thursday, the Lions promoted long-time assistant offensive line coach Steve Oliver to the tight ends coach job that opened up when Tyler Roehl took the offensive coordinator job at Iowa State. Skipper fits right into that open role. This is the perfect place for him to start his coaching career.
Skipper can learn to coach from one of the best offensive line coaches in the league, Hank Fraley, and he can help work with the young talent that’s on the line right now, and work to install what the Lions want to do with the benefit of knowing exactly how to implement it, since he’s been doing it for a long time.
The Lions have already shown they’re open to doing this. They added Shaun Dion Hamilton to their coaching staff right after he retired in 2022. They were also open to at least interviewing David Blough for their offensive coordinator job after he just played for the team in 2023.
Keep an eye on this one. The Lions have not announced their full coaching staff just yet, but we could be days away from seeing that. Last year, the Lions announced their staff on Feb. 10.
