Detroit Lions Mailbag: The extension that nobody is talking about that needs to get done
The Detroit Lions start training camp on Wednesday, and it's time to get one more pre-camp mailbag out of the way. That's not accurate. The Lions start camp this week. That's not accurate. The Lions start camp this week. The rookies are reporting on Wednesday, the 16th, and the veterans report on Saturday, the 19th. Dan Campbell will hold his first presser, and practice will be open to the media on Sunday, the 20th. Chargers got a three-day head start at most.
Hmm. For quarterbacks, I'd also love to see Lamar Jackson. It would be cool to see Josh Allen and Hallie Steinfeld on the show as well. For the third guy, it would be cool to see a rookie quarterback like Jaxson Dart be followed around during his rookie season.
In terms of another position, I think a cornerback's show would be awesome. I feel we don't get to hear enough from these guys, and it would be cool to see that. My guess, though, is they'll do an edge rusher show next.
What do you think about an Amik extension? Is it possible before free agency?

I was somewhat surprised it didn't get done this offseason. I felt Robertson showed, especially at the end of the season when he had to play on the outside, that he is definitely a player worth having around.
It wouldn't cost a whole lot. We projected back in February that if the Lions did extend Robertson, it'd likely be a two-year extension worth $11 million with $5 million of that being guaranteed. That is not a bad deal at all.
At this point, it would seem that Robertson is going to either play out the rest of his deal and hit free agency in March or the Lions will look to do something similar to Alim McNeill or David Montgomery and get the deal done during the season. We'll have to wait and find out.
Do they plan to play any starters in the preseason to shake off rust? Even if only for one quarter or drive per game?

You might expect some of the younger players, such as Tate Ratledge and Christian Mahogany, as well as the rookies, to get some snaps in these games, maybe. Otherwise, the Lions have been pretty steadfast on the idea that the joint practices mean more for the starters than the preseason games do.
The Lions have joint practices with the Dolphins and Texans this summer. They'll get plenty of reps for their starters in those practices. We'll find out for sure when we get a chance to talk to coaches next week.
If you were creating a Monster Squad to save the city of Detroit, what 5 people employed by the Lions would you team up with?

Ok, this is easy. I'm talking Dan Campbell, Hank Fraley, Penei Sewell, Chris Spielman, and Kelvin Sheppard to war with me. We will save this city from what I can only assume is either a giant beam coming from aliens from the sky or some sort of zombie apocalypse.
History shows that Jared Goff being a new girl dad could lead to Super Bowl win for the Lions
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is having a big week. The biggest week of his entire life. He became a father when he and his wife, Christen, welcomed their first child, a daughter named Romy. Congratulations to the Goff family are in order. This prompted me to take a look at the correlation between girl […]
