Detroit Lions Training Camp Observations Day 1: The future at center seems clearer, and young guys get big chances
The Detroit Lions were back at camp on Sunday, and there were some big things to talk about right off the bat. The biggest story was obviously the loss of Levi Obwuzrukie for the season. That's a hard blow. Outside of that, there were many things we observed that are worth talking about. The center […]
The Detroit Lions were back at camp on Sunday, and there were some big things to talk about right off the bat. The biggest story was obviously the loss of Levi Obwuzrukie for the season. That's a hard blow. Outside of that, there were many things we observed that are worth talking about.
The center conversation seems a little clear in terms of direction
Lions head coach Dan Campbell did say that the interior of the offensive line was an open competition, but it seems like right now the plan is to go with Tate Ratledge at center. That's at least what it looked like on Sunday when he spent most of his day snapping for the first team.
The Lions did have Graham Glasgow get some reps at center, too, but he spent most of the day at right guard. Kinglsey Eguakun got a lot of reps with the second team, and then Michael Niese also put in reps at center with the third team.
So far, Ratledge appears to have the emotion down and is reading the defense nicely, but pads aren't on, and this isn't fully live. We'll see what happens next week.
Hooker showed some nice flashes, but also showed the same problems we're used to
There were some occasions where Hooker looked pretty good out there. He moved around in the pocket and found an open Zach Horton on a play that drew some oohs and ahhs, but then on another play, he held onto the ball too long and wound up having to go for a short pass to Kenny Yeboah, and that pass was broken up by safety Ian Kennelly.
Later, he threw another ball that got tipped by the defensive line, and had another one that was super low and would have been incomplete.
He's not in any danger at the moment because Kyle Allen didn't have the best day, but once pads go on, this is going to be a battle to keep an eye on.
Goff had some rust
Goff mostly had a good day, but there were multiple plays in a row where he overthrew his man on deep balls or threw passes that went over the heads of his receivers. Nothing to be worried about in the long run, but he was someone who showed a fair amount of rust.
Sione Vaki gets time with the first team, but Reynolds' strong day has him holding the edge
It was cool to see Vaki get some time with the first team. It really shows that they intend to have a spot for him in the future. But the veteran Craig Reynolds had a strong day. He made some plays, and you could hear Dan Campbell from the sidelines cheering him on. This team has a lot of trust in him, and it shows every year.
Ennis Rakestraw injury
Rakestraw left the field with about 30 minutes left in the day. Per the team, he's being evaluated for a chest injury. That's all we know at this time.
Highlight of the day
The best thing I saw all day was a beautiful throw from Goff where Tim Patrick went up over Amik Robertson to grab the catch. I don't know if it would have been a touchdown in a live game, but it certainly would have been a first down.
Dan Campbell confirms the worst nightmare for a defensive lineman’s season
On Friday, the Detroit Lions put out a transaction update where they had defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike listed on the reserve/PUP list. The original thought was that being on that list meant that he was going to miss the first four games of the season. The other thought was that maybe this had something to […]
