Drew Petzing’s comments confirm suspicion on why the Lions hired him
That makes perfect sense
Let’s call a spade a spade. The Detroit Lions’ hiring of former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing was a pretty big surprise. He was not on anyone’s list going into the search. But, as we’ve learned over the last few weeks, just digging into learning more about him, he fits what the Lions want to do on offense.
On Thursday, Petzing sat down with Jeremy Reisman and Erik Schlitt of Pride of Detroit, and for the first time, we got a glimpse of what he wants to do in Detroit. One of the first things that feels necessary to talk about is why he believes the Lions hired him.
Drew Petzing explains why he thinks the Lions hired him
“I think it’s the confidence that I go about the job with. It’s my background in a lot of different rooms,” Petzing said. “And one of the key points of being an offensive coordinator is you got to be in charge of everything, and you have to hold people accountable. And I think it helps having a diverse background on the offensive side of the ball to be able to do that, because I’ve had to coach the details of how to block, you know, wide zone on the front side with a tight end, or how to release first press as a receiver. Where the quarterback’s eyes and where his feet should be in the quarterback room.
“And I think that was probably one of those things that I like to think showed throughout the interview,” Petzig continued. “And then the other part of calling plays for three years, you start to figure out why you’re doing things, how to highlight talent that you do or don’t have. And I think that’s something that hopefully people were able to see throughout my three years there in Arizona. And I’m hoping I’m getting better every single game and every year I’m doing it.”
That was essentially one of the big reasons why this hiring made a lot of sense. Petzing has been a quarterbacks coach, a receivers coach, a tight ends coach, and an offensive coordinator. He’s done every job in the building and, as he mentions, he’s seen the game from just about every angle you can see it from. That makes a large difference.
