The Detroit Lions will begin trading camp on Sunday and we’re going to take one final 53-man prediction ahead of training camp.
Quarterback (2)
IN: Jared Goff, Kyle Allen
OUT: Hendon Hooker
We'll see what happens during training camp, but right now I have to go with the guy who has the experience and the reps. Allen has a lot of that over Hooker. I'm also still sold on the idea that they bring in one more guy this summer.
Running back (3)
IN: Jahymr Gibbs, David Montgomery, Sione Vaki
OUT: Craig Reynolds, Jabari Small, Kye Robichaux
It's hard not to see Reynolds as the odd man out here unless the Lions carry a fourth running back. It's time to move forward with Vaki. The guy you see a big future with. This doesn't mean Reynolds is fully gone. A place for him on the practice squad is a must.
Wide Receiver (6)
IN: Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Isaac TeSlaa, Tim Patrick, Kalif Raymond, Jackson Meeks
OUT: Ronnie Bell, Tom Kennedy, Dominic Lovett, Jakobie Keeny-James, Malik Taylor
TeSlaa should be expected to supplant Tim Patrick as the team's WR3 and X receiver. That doesn't mean Patrick is going anywhere. He's the new WR4.5. He'll share that with Raymond. Meeks is a very intriguing player who could shock everyone by making it. I like Lovett, but the practice squad is where he should be for a minute until it's time to have him replace Raymond for that return man spot. Unless he has a killer summer.
Tight End (3)
IN: Sam LaPorta, Brock Wright, Zach Horton
Out: Shane Zylstra, Kenny Yeboah, Luke Deal
I have my eyes locked on Horton this summer, and it's because he's such a good run blocker and has fullback possibilities, too. That gets him the spot over Yeboah or Zylstra.
Offensive Line (9)
IN: Taylor Decker, Graham Glasgow, Christian, Mahogany, Tate Ratledge Penei Sewell, Giovanni Manu, Dan Skipper, Miles Frazier, Kinglsey Eguakun
OUT: Kayode Awosika, Colby Sorsdal, Jamarco Jones, Netane Muti, Michael Niese, Mason Miller, Tyrstan Colon
Life after Ragnow will be tough, but the Lions have some good young talent and maybe the best offensive line coach in the league. Right now, we don't really know who's nailing down that starting center role, but I can tell you that you should not count out Eguakun. He's got a shot.
Defensive Line (10)
IN: Aidan Hutchinson, DJ Reader, Josh Pascal, Mekhi Wingo, Za'Darius Smith, , Roy Lopez, Tyleik Williams, Ahmed Hassanien, Marcus Davenport, Mitchell Agude
OUT: Al-Quadin Muhammad, Brodric Martin, Myles Adams, Pat O'Connor, Chris Smith, Isaac Ukwu, Nate Lynn, Keith Cooper Jr, Raequan Williams,
PUP list: Alim McNeill, Levi Onwuzurike
I still think Smith is coming back this offseason at some point. I don't know if it happens before camp or during it, but I believe it. There are some guys out there that some fans were probably hoping to keep around, like Muhammad or Ukwu, but there are only so many spots open. The practice squad is open, though.
Linebacker (6)
IN: Alex Anzalone, Derrick Barnes, Jack Campbell, Grant Stuard, Trevor Nowaske, Zach Cunningham
OUT: DaRon Gilbert, Anthony Pittman, Ezekiel Turner
PUP list: Malcolm Rodriguez
This one was super easy to figure out until you get to that last spot. I went with the veteran Cunningham here. At the end of the day, when Rodriguez comes back in November, he's going to get his spot back.
Cornerback (6)
IN: D.J. Reed, Terrion Arnold, Ennis Rakestraw, Amik Robertson, Rock Ya-Sin, Khalil Dorsey
OUT: Stantley Thomas-Oliver, DiCaprio Bootle, Tyson Russell
The Lions upgraded their cornerback room last year and then upgraded again with a better CB1 and better depth. A healthy Rakestraw is going to make a big difference.
Safety (5)
IN: Kerby Joseph, Brian Branch, Avonte Maddox, Morice Norris, Dan Jackson
OUT: Erik Hallet, Loren Strickland, Ian Kennelly
Lions defensive backs coach Deshea Townsend certainly made it seem like the Lions would carry four safeties and that the fourth spot was an all-out brawl. I think he has so much talent there that he moves it to five.
Special Teams (3)
IN: Jake Bates, Jack Fox, Hogan Hatten
Out:
Nothing is changing here at all.
