The Detroit Lions had a stadium full of emotional fans on Sunday night and that emotion caused them to boo former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and his wife Kelly. A lot has been said about that booing. There's been some outrageous claims and then retractions of those outrageous claims. Either way, there might be some bad blood for a while.
I get both sides of the argument. On one side, Stafford was a class act for this city for 12 years. He often played through injuries and gave this city some of the best Lions moments ever. On top of that, the breakup was incredibly amicable and no feelings were hurt. I don't think Stafford should have been cheered, but I don't think he should have been booed either.
On the flip side, I think a lot of Lions fans did look at this as the Lions organization not just playing against their former quarterback, but against their past. This was a chance to bury the demons that have haunted them for years. So I can totally understand why fans would boo the past and cheer for the future. Lastly I totally get why they'd support Goff here since the that breakup was definitely not amicable.
Either way you feel, former All-Pro Lion and current Eagles cornerback Darius Slay was not a fan of the booing.
"I heard they booed Stafford. That's the one thing I don't like. That's kinda bad right there." Slay said. "I know y'all playing him in the playoffs and y'all wanna win. Y'all could have given him a standing ovation for 30 seconds, just acknowledge that what he did for organization for 12 years. But to do that and boo him and his kids and all that kind of stuff, I ain't gonna lie, if I was Stafford I probably wouldn't step back over there. That was terrible Detroit. You gotta be better than that."
Slay went on a little longer about how Stafford helped dig the Lions out of their 0-16 hole and how they didn't boo him when he came back with the Eagles in 2022. The full interview is below.
Slay did take to Twitter later in the day and tweeted this. So there's still love there.
Rams players warn Bucs about Lions fans at Ford Field
I was in the press box last Sunday to cover the Detroit Lions playoff win over the Rams and I can say with certainty that I have never been inside of a louder stadium than that. It was so loud that the reporter next to me told me about how he went to see Metallica […]
