Yes, that is a real headline and not some weird scenario that was created by artificial intelligence. The Los Angeles Dodgers played the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday and an interesting moment happened that involved the Detroit Lions, sort of.
Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy was attempting to make a play in the bottom of the sixth and had to catch the ball before it went into the stands. Then out of nowhere former Lions quarterback Rodney Peete stuck his glove out and made the catch. A moment that very visibly upset Muncy. Yes, this really happened.
Fan interference was not called and at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter because it's an exhibition game in Japan and the Dodgers won anyway, but it's fun that sports worlds can converge like this. Now if this were the playoffs, believe me, it would be front-page news right now.
Peete making the play should come as no real surprise. Peete played baseball for USC and was selected in the MLB Draft three different times. including in the 1990 draft where he was selected by the Detroit Tigers.
Peete was taken by the Lions in the year before in the 1989 NFL Draft and played five seasons for the Lions as their starting quarterback. He played for 15 years in the NFL and had stints with the Eagles, Panthers, Cowboys, Raiders, and Commanders.
Peete is also married to Holly Robinson-Peete who was on Hangin with Mr. Cooper. That's not super pertinent to the story, but I love that show, and here was a chance to talk about it. Check it out on Hulu. There's a cool episode where he plays for the Golden State Warriors.
