Man, when it rains, it pours. The Detroit Lions and their fans got some super exciting news ahead of Thanksgiving that All-Pro center Frank Ragnow was coming out of retirement to join the Lions for the remainder of the season. At the time, it seemed like a godsend. This is what was going to save the season. Then the Lions lost on Thanksgiving, and Frank Ragnow failed his physical, and it’s not happening anymore. Here’s the Lions’ statement:

After a failed physical, Frank Ragnow will not be coming out of retirement to rejoin the Lions

“Frank Ragnow reported to our facility yesterday and went through the normal process of meetings. Unfortunately, during the routine meeting with our medical team, Frank failed his physical.

The medical exam revealed a Grade 3 hamstring strain that will keep him from participating for the remainder of the regular season. For that reason, Frank will not be rejoining the Lions.

Frank has always been a team-first guy and is a true warrior. He will forever be a Lion.”

So there you go. It’s over. Ragnow is not coming back this season, and it’s the most bummer news story I’ve probably ever had to write in my career. The Lions are not out of the playoffs yet; they can still make things happen, but man, this is a huge blow to all of that.
