You hate to see this happen to a player. Detroit Lions offensive lineman Halapoulivaati Vaitai has been dealing with a back injury since late 2021. This injury would keep him out during the entire 2022 season and after he was able to get a few games in this season, the same injury is hurting him again.

Vaitai missed some time earlier in the year and then came back, but never actually played in a game. He never took the field against the Raiders.  He missed practice all week last week and the team elected to put him on injured reserve this past Tuesday.

Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell was asked if Vaitai could be done for the year on Wednesday and this is what he had to say:

"I think it's probably unlikely. You want to say never say never. But I would say it's probably unlikely."

That's a tough loss for the Lions, but it certainly explains signing Michael Schofield on Tuesday. Schofield is a guy that has plenty of starting experience at both guard and tackle.

As far as the future for Vaitai, it seems uncertain at this point. But Dan Campbell did say that the team wants him around.

"V is unbelievable, he really is." Campbell said. "I mean there's nothing easy about the injury he's had to come back from, and he had the knee, and he has been rehabbing this thing for a long time. He's putting in a ton of work. And that's not easy. It's not easy at all. No matter what I told him, we want him around here. He wants to be around and he's still very much a part of us."
