If you’re hoping David Montgomery stays with the Lions, these Drew Petzing comments might excite you
The pieces seem to be coming together nicely here
One of the biggest things on the minds of Detroit Lions fans these days is what is going to happen with David Montgomery? Is he staying? Is he going? Not long ago, Brad Holmes talked about the possibility of trading him, and then at the Pro Bowl, Jahmyr Gibbs said it was all essentially up to Montgomery. Montgomery certainly talked like a guy who is staying.
So when Drew Petzing talked with Pride of Detroit on Thursday, one of the big questions everyone was hoping to get an answer to was will Montgomery stay? Sadly, Petzing could not give that answer. But what he did do was confirm that the film wasn’t lying and that…
Drew Petzing sounds like he’d like to have two headed monster at running back
“You’re always going to try to find ways to get your best players on the field. And you know, whether that’s 25 times a game or five times a game, I think that it has to be something you’re considering, finding ways to do, finding ways to be creative. And I also know no one’s going to play 100% of the snaps, or if they do, they’re not going to make it through 17 games. So it’s a balance and a fine line of there’s also times you got to find time to get them a break and get them a blow so that they can make it through a four-month or five-month NFL season. So it is kind of finding that balance. But yes, when you have two players of that dynamic ability, you want to find things that they can do together on the field, because it puts stress on the defense.”
I think the big part of that statement that you want to hear if you’re Montgomery is not so much that Petzing wants to have two good running backs, it’s that he understands there needs to be a balance there. That was something John Morton struggled with, and frankly, it was something that Dan Campbell also struggled with.
You have to find a way to get your best guys on the field, but you also have to know when that best time is and what the best situations are. If you’re Montgomery, do you hear that in what Petzing is saying? I do, but I’m not Montgomery.
We’re going to have the chance to talk with Lions GM Brad Holmes at the NFL Combine in a couple of weeks, and we’ll hopefully get some sort of update on Montgomery and what the status is for 2026. Right now, it feels positive.
