Yup, it’s exactly what Lions fans thought it was

The Detroit Lions are in the midst of their offseason, and the thing fans have their eyes on the most is what will happen with David Montgomery. The last place the team left off with it was at Brad Holmes’s final presser of the season, when he said the Lions could potentially trade the veteran running back.

“Those are discussions that we’re gonna have to have a lot more in-depth in terms of what is the best plan for him going forward? You know, is it? Is it somewhere else? or whatever the case may be,” Holmes said. “But just really appreciate everything that he has done for us. If it does end up going that way, I hope it doesn’t, because we love David Montgomery. He’s a good football player, and I wish we had been able to get more utilization from him.”

“I know Dan (Campbell) feels the same way. But, you know, those are conversations that we’re going to have to have, because we’ve got a lot of respect for that player. He deserves to be in a situation where his skill set can be utilized. We’ll love it for it to be here, but if it can’t be here, you know, then you have to just see what you can work out the best for him.”

At the Pro Bowl, Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs was asked whether he hoped Montgomery would be back, and he confirmed the suspicion most have had.

David Montgomery staying in Detroit is all up to him

“Of course I want David back,” Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs told the Detroit Free Press at the Pro Bowl last week. “The whole team would want David back, but it’s ultimately up to him. He’s going to do what’s best for him and his family, and whatever he decides to do, I’m going to support 100%. But of course we want him back, though.”

So there you go. It turns out that Montgomery’s Instagram posts might have been sending messages the whole time. I didn’t think that was what was going on, but I’m wrong. It turns out Montgomery may have been disgruntled with how things went in 2025.

Here’s the good thing. The Lions’ system under Drew Petzing will rely heavily on the run game, and the film shows that the guy who runs the ball, Montgomery, fits that. The other good thing is that Montgomery hasn’t been talking like someone looking for the way out anymore.

“The really good teams have the rarity of having two really good guys (at running back), and Jahmyr is one of, if not the best, running backs in the league, and I believe I’m a damn good back myself,” Montgomery said. “Every chance I get to showcase myself, I will. I just think having us both together and us both being as selfless as we are, I think it’s really important. It’s something special to be a part of.”

So at this point, it’s just a waiting game, and we’ll see what the answer looks like soon enough. You have to believe that we’ll know something before free agency. Maybe when we talk with Holmes, Campbell, and Petzing at the NFL Combine in a few weeks.
