After the Detroit Lions’ week 18 win over the Chicago Bears, it was very emotional in the Lions’ locker room. One of the most emotional guys in the room was swing tackle Dan Skipper. It seemed at the time that he was very close to calling it a career. On Thursday, that became reality.

Lions tackle Dan Skipper will retire from the NFL

Skipper was one of the more fun stories with the Lions. After stints with the Cowboys, Broncos, Patriots, Texans, Raiders, and Colts, Skipper found a home in Detroit and never really let it go. He became a big part of the team’s culture and a fan favorite.

Perhaps he’ll be most remembered for the eligible receiver debacle against the Dallas Cowboys in 2023, but for me, it’s the game where Skipper had to start at guard for the first time in his life in 2022 against the Washington Commanders. A moment that had the locker room cheering his name after a solid game and a win.

As for Skippers’ next move, Justin Rogers of Detroit Football Network reports that Skipper plans to go into coaching and will start by helping out at the upcoming East/ West Shrine Bowl. Perhaps he could find his way onto the Lions’ coaching staff someday.
