The Detroit Lions really want a pass rusher to be opposite Aidan Hutchinson. They really need a pass rusher to be opposite Aidan Hutchinson. How about the guy who should have been the Super Bowl MVP? How about Josh Sweat.

The ESPN crew was talking about Sweat on their free agent special on SportsCenter and right at the end of the clip you hear Adam Schefter say "I'm hearing Detroit."

We just saw Sweat have an unreal performance in the Super Bowl that saw him put up seven pressures and three sacks on Patrick Mahomes. It was actually shocking when he didn't take home the Super Bowl MVP Trophy.

In total, Sweat put up 66 pressures and 11 sacks for the Eagles in 2024. That is a highly productive season for him, but it's not an anomaly. Sweat had 70 pressures and eight sacks for Philadelphia in 2023.

The pairing with Hutchinson and also having passing, rushing defensive tackle Alim McNeill and space eater DJ Reader in the middle, there is just so much to take advantage of for both Hutchinson and Sweat.

In terms of what the projected cost is going to be for Sweat, right now he's expected to get a three-year deal for $50.25 million. That is not bad to get Sweat, who is still 27 years old, on a deal that would pay him $16.75 million a year. You have to make that deal if you're Brad Holmes and the Detroit Lions.

Obviously nothing is set in stone. Schefter said he's hearing Detroit, but that does not mean a deal is imminent. and that does not mean a deal happens at all. Lions are apparently interested, but they may also decide the price is too high and back out.

Update: Sweat is expected to sign with the Cardinals for an extra season and about $16 million more than the projected cost. Lions are looking for something a little cheaper, it would appear.
