Things between Jerry Jacobs and the Detroit Lions started off so well. Jacobs was an undrafted rookie out of Arkansas that wowed everyone at camp in route to nailing down a roster spot. In 2022 he continued to show improvement and thought by many was that he would be ready for a starting role in 2023.
Jacobs got that role and it unfortunately went pretty badly. Bad enough to the point where he was benched down the stretch of the season. Jacobs then finished the year with an injury that sent him to injured reserve right before the playoffs started.
As a restricted free agent, the Lions could have easily tendered him and got him right back, but on Wednesday they chose not to do that. Jacobs will now become an unrestricted free agent.
Now, this doesn't mean it's a lock that Jacobs is gone, but there's a better chance that he is than there is one that he's not. The Lions are reportedly going to be aggressive in finding a high end corner in free agency and they talked to several cornerbacks at the NFL Combine last week.
The Lions are also expected to pursue a larger role for Steven Gilmore in 2024 after stashing him on the 53-man roster throughout the 2023 season. Jacobs is just the odd man out in all these situations.
Couple all of that with Jacobs thanking Detroit in a similar way to how others had thanks Detroit right after being released. It seemed at the time like the writing was on the wall.
Jacobs should find a new spot to play in 2024. He does have some ability and would be a nice depth piece anywhere he lands, that's just not likely to be Detroit.
