Lions expected to lose Carlton Davis to the Patriots, but it never felt he was coming back, and the Lions might feel set at corner for the most part

The Detroit Lions ended their 2024 season without Carlton Davis after he broke his jaw in December. Even at that point it seemed like there was a real good chance that the Lions would never have gotten back. Now we know that he is gone.
Davis is expected to sign a big money deal with the New England Patriots.
The big thing that made it all look possible was the expectation that Davis would get a big deal. The projected deal was a three-year $45 million deal. The Patriots topped that with three years for $60 million. When Jaycee Horn got his big extension, you knew for sure that it was over for Davis and the Lions.
The other thing that Amik Robertson came in and played CB1 and arguably played just as well and at times better. Especially in Week 18 when he locked down Justin Jefferson and held him to three catches for 54 yards on nine targets.
At that time, the question became, would you rather extend Robertson on a cheaper deal or pay Davis big money? We know now that the Lions didn't have any problem letting Davis go.
So what do the Lions do at cornerback in 2025? Don't be shocked if they stick with Robertson as their CB1 on the outside and then draft someone. We do know that they are looking for a corner in free agency, but that they're hoping to do so on the cheaper end.
49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward seems like the best fit for Detroit at this point. They can get him in the $14 million a year range for a few seasons. He's an upgrade over Davis if you ask us. He is coming off a not so good year, but there are circumstances for that. He lost his daughter last October and really affected him personally and professionally.
