This has just been one of the most frustrating parts of the Detroit Lions’ season. Their All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph has been such a big part of this team in recent years and led the league in interceptions last year. He was well on his way to doing that again this year, too. Then a knee injury came along, and it’s changed everything. He hasn’t played since Week 6, but the Lions have not put him on injured reserve. Now that might be an option.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell says the Lions have had a setback with Kerby Joseph

Joseph was back at practice on Wednesday and then wound up missing Thursday’s practice. Campbell was asked about it on Friday and said Joseph had a setback and that the Lions don’t have a good feeling about him playing on Sunday against the Rams. When asked if Joseph could be a candidate to go on IR and end his season, Campbell said that was a possibility. In terms of what the problem is and why it won’t go away, Campbell simply said, “It bothers him, that’s the best way to say it.”

At this point, the reports are that it’s not expected to be a career-altering thing and that Joseph is expected to have some sort of offseason surgery. I urge everyone not to put any stock into what the Twitter doctors are saying. They have not once treated Joseph and have no clue what the actual injury is.

In terms of the long term, Campbell said again on Friday that he’s not concerned about the long-term effects of either Joseph or Brian Branch’s injuries, as well as the state of the Lions’ safety room. He also said he wasn’t concerned about the short-term part of it either.
