Not long ago, when Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson was Detroit Lions offenisve coordinator Ben Johnson, he gained a lot of popularity for the trick plays that he was calling. Lions promote Assistant offensive line coach Steve Oliver to tight ends coach

Oliver has been with the Lions for five seasons as both an offensive quality control coach and the assistant offensive line coach. During that time, Johnson had Oliver and other assistants shadow positional coaches so that they could learn more. The goal for Johnson seemed to be to help grow other guys into being offensive coordinators someday. For Oliver, this is the next step.

This is not Oliver’s first job as a tight ends coach. I mean, it is in the NFL, but not in football. He was a tight ends coach for Idaho and for San Diego before coming to the Lions in 2020. This is a nice promotion for him, and he should do well. Just a week ago, we wrote about how he’s a future offenisve coordinator. So the belief in Olvier has been there for a bit.
