Lions have been in contact with David Montgomery, but Holmes’ comments at the Combine don’t inspire confidence
I don’t know about this one Lions fans
It’s the thing that every Detroit Lions fan has on their minds at this point in the offseason. What is going to happen with David Montgomery?
Not long ago, Brad Holmes talked about the possibility of trading him, and then at the Pro Bowl, Jahmyr Gibbs said it was all essentially up to Montgomery. Montgomery certainly talked like a guy who is staying. Then Drew Petzing’s comments alluded to the idea that he’d like to have Montgomery and Gibbs together. But…
Brad Holmes’ comments at the NFL Combine don’t make you feel warm and fuzzy inside
“I’ve been in touch with David’s agent and his representation also. Look, we love David. He’s a great player. We’d love to have him, you know, kind of want to put last year in the rear view and just move forward, but obviously, you know, a player has to want to be at a certain place as well, so those conversations are still fluid, and it was kind of see how it goes.”
So yeah. Nobody expected Holmes to come out at the Combine and say, “Yeah, Montgomery is staying for sure.” But you hoped there would be something that at least leaned in that direction. These comments make you wonder if Montgomery has just planted his feet on this one, and he wants a change of scenery. Perhaps he’d like to be the number one starter somewhere.
The Combine is going to be a big deal for this one because this is one of the few times a year that GMs of all 32 teams are in the same building, and deals can get done. Make no mistake, there will be teams who inquire about Montgomery and whether or not he is available for trade, and what the Lions would be willing to move him for.
If the Lions do move on from Montgomery, there will be some good options on there in free agency and the draft to replace him. There’s also Sione Vaki and Jacob Saylors, who could be ready for bigger roles. Hold on tight, Lions fans. We’ll see what happens.
