The Detroit Lions just landed a huge addition to their coaching staff after hiring Drew Petzing to be their offensive coordinator. Now they’re adding one more huge addition with a guy they just interviewed for that same offensive coordinator job.

Former Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka will be joining the Lions coaching staff

Kafka was considered one of the top offensive coordinator candidates in the league this offseason, and he received interviews from the Eagles and Lions and a head coach interview from the Giants.

This is a big addition to the coaching staff, with so many top offensive minds: Dan Campbell, Petzing, Kafka, and Hank Fraley. The Lions essentially have four offensive coordinators now. Five, if you count Bruce Gradkowski, who was an OC in the UFL.

In addition to his time with the Giants, Kafka was Patrick Mahomes’ quarterback coach from 2018 to 2021. He was also the Chiefs’ passing game coordinator. We don’t know what his role in Detroit will be, but it might actually be that passing game coordinator role.

That could mean David Shaw will not be returning to Detroit, which felt like a possibility since he was mostly a John Morton hire. What a big turn of events for the Lions.
