Last January the Detroit Lions made one of their biggest hires of the last few years when they hired Terrell Willaims away from the Tennessee Titans to be their new defensive line coach.
Williams has been considered to be one of the best, if not the best, defensive line coaches in the league. You could see the work he put in pay off with a lot of defensive linemen putting forth solid seasons despite being the third or fourth guys on the depth chart.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell has praised his former Dolphins co-worker on a number of occasions, including Monday after Diviosnal weekend.
"A guy like (Lions Run Game Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach) Terrell Williams, I’m fortunate that I believe he’s the best, but he’s also the right guy, they happened to go hand-in-hand."
Now there's a solid chance the Lions could be losing the best and the right guy to the New England Patriots. It's believed that Williams is new head coach Mike Vrabel's ideal choice to be defensive coordinator there according to ESPN Patriots beat writer Mike Reiss.
Williams was of course the defensive line coach for the Titans when Vrabel was Tennessee's head coach and Williams helped the Titans defensive line have some of their best seasons there.
Losing Williams is a hard loss for a team that's likely to rebuild their defensive line a bit this offseason. The Lions will be looking for new edge rushers and probably some new interior guys too.
Multiple players have credited Williams for helping the Lions' defensive line have the early success that it had before all the injuries happened. The Lions are likely to have a lot of open spots on their staff this offseason and this will be the hardest one to fill.
Update: Williams has officially been hired as the Patriots new defensive coordinator.
The Lions will consider Jared Goff’s input in the offensive coordinator search, what that means for guys on the inside, and what outside candidates could see interviews
The Detroit Lions are soon expected to be on the lookout for a new offensive coordinator. While Lions head coach Dan Campbell says he has not been told anything yet, he did say that he expects to lose both coordinators. Campbell also said that he believes the Lions have guys on their staff right now […]
