At the NFL League meetings last week, Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes said that the Lions were keeping in touch with some free agents. Za'Darisu Smith was one of those guys, but he's not the only edge rusher they're maintaining contact with.

Per ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler, the Lions met with former Bears starting edge rusher DeMarcus Walker last week.

The former second-round pick out of Flordia State has played for the Broncos, Texans, and Titans, along with his two seasons for the Bears. He started 17 games for the Bears in 2024. He had 39 pressures and four sacks for them. The previous season, he had 47 pressures and four sacks as a starter.

For Detroit, he would be someone who could start early before passing the baton to the guy, or guys, that the Lions are expected to start. At 30 years old, he can be another valuable resource to the younger guys in the locker room.

What would a deal for Walker cost the Lions? Probably less than what Smith may be looking for and less than what Smith was making ahead of his release. A similar deal would likely be something like what his former Bears teammate Darrell Taylor just got with the Texans. A one-year deal worth $4.75 million.

That's not bad at all for a decent veteran edge rusher coming off a decent year. We'll see if the Lions wind up going this route. Williams has also met with the Giants.
