As we know, the Detroit Lions are going to be looking for some tackle help this year. Even though Taylor Decker is coming back, they plan to find more depth.

Finding that next tackle for the future is something you can expect the Lions to do in the 2026 NFL Draft. At least you should expect that, but it looks like they’re still planning to find some depth.

Lions to meet with former 10th overall pick Jedrick Willis this week

Ok, let’s talk about a few things here. Yes, Willis is coming off not playing in 2025. That, of course, is going to lead to some jokes about how Brad Holmes likes to sign injured players. I get it. The next is that Willis should not be expected to be a starter for the Lions. Still, he’s one of the best free agent tackles out there because this isn’t a great class for tackles this year.

So if Willis is not a starter, why talk to him? Because if we learned anything in 2025, it’s that the Lions need much more quality depth. They also need a new swing tackle since Dan Skipper just retired. Willis could theoretically fit both of those roles if the medicals check out and the Lions look to sign him.

Now, if the Lions do sign him and Decker is back, that doesn’t mean they can’t still draft someone in the first two rounds of the draft. Having strong depth gives the Lions a chance to draft a guy like Arizona State’s Max Iheanachor, who is still relatively new to football and maybe needs just one year to cook in the NFL. Even having Willis on the practice squad is worth doing if Iheanachor is good to be the backup or starter right away. Depth, depth, and more depth.
