Lions UDFA Spotlight: Kingsley Eguakun has a chance to be a big part of the Lions future
The Detroit Lions had a really strong 2024 NFL Draft for the future of their offensive line. For starters, they drafted their right guard of the future in Giovanni Manu. The Detroit Lions had a really strong 2024 NFL Draft for the future of their offensive line. For starters, they drafted their right guard of the future in Giovanni Manu. At 6-foot-7 and 352 pounds, Manu figures to be a gigantic option next to Penei Sewell on the right side. Then the Lions flat out stole Christian Mahogany in the sixth round for the left side.
Both left and right guards are set and Colby Sorsdal should be moving to left tackle. The idea is there for what most of this line can be. But what about the man in the middle? Well, the Lions might have grabbed that guy as an undrafted free agent this past weekend. We're talking about Florida center Kingsley Eguakun.
Eguakun is a player that was expected to be drafted in the sixth or seventh round of this draft, but an ankle injury kept him out for much of the season and he only played four games in 2023. He suffered the injury in camp and tried to play through it, but it just kept affecting him.
Still, Eguakun played pretty well in the four games that he played. He actually played pretty well through his whole time at Florida. In three seasons as a starter, Eguakun allowed just one sack, six quarterback hits and 28 pressures. That's really good.
So how does he find his way on to the 53-man roster in Detroit? The road could be long for him and he might have to go through the practice squad first, but he has talent and he's very young. Eguakun just turned 23-years-old in March.
The idea is that if he can get time under Hank Fraley, Frank Ragnow and the training staff, I believe that he has the physical makeup and talent to be able to start at center for this team in a few years when Ragnow potentially walks away from football.
We'll see how things go in camp and if that ankle holds up. If it does, we could be seeing Eguakun on the Lions practice squad in 2024.
