Lions vs 49ers: Moon stuff

This whole moon thing has been a lot of fun for me. I'm not going to lie, I was hesitant at first becasue I'm not an astrology expert. That's really my wife's territory. What I do like is finding patterns and this allows me to do that. Ok, let's get to the moon stuff for the Detroit Lions vs San Francisco 49ers NFC Championship game.

What kind of moon is it?

This week the Lions will be playing during a wanning gibbous moon. I have no idea what that means to be honest. Here's what NASA says:

"The waning gibbous phase is between a full moon and a half moon. Waning means it is getting smaller."

Ok, thanks NASA. Now, have the Lions played during a wanning gibbous moon this year? The answer there is yes. The Lions have played on a wanning gibbous day twice. Once against the Raiders and the other against the Saints. The Lions are 2-0 on wanning gibbous days.

The 49ers played on four wanning gibbous days this season and they are 3-1. This is a pretty even moon matchup. Yeah, that's a real sentence I just typed. I love it.

Historical moon stuff

Ok, the Lions are playing in the NFC Championship game for the second time in franchise history. The first time did not go well. The Lions got beat pretty bad by the Commanders. The good news is that happened during a waxing crescent moon.

The Lions suffered a hard loss to the 49ers in the wildcard round back in 1983 when Lions kicker Eddie Murray missed what would have been a game winning field goal. That was a wanning crescent moon.

The Lions did beat the 49ers in the playoffs back in 1957. A game that sent them to their last championship game. That was a waxing crescent.

So there you go. There's no big moon stat this week like there was in the first two weeks. The Lions are good during this phase and the 49ers have been too. We'll see who comes out on top in this one. Hold on, it's going to be a fun ride.

7 takeaways from the Lions divisional round win

I've been covering this team for 10 years and I've been a fan my whole life. For a long time I wondered if I would ever get to type words like I'm about to type. Now I can. Here goes, I'm going to type them right now. You ready? The Detroit Lions are going to […]
