No, Lions rookie Tate Ratledge didn’t really ask for Thanksgiving off

It’s satire, people.

What a world we’re living in these days, right? Media literacy is kind of at an all-time low. We won’t say much more than that.

On Monday, the Detroit Lions were coming off a bad loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on national television, and one of the most recognizable satirical sites around decided to have fun with that by writing up an article that says Lions rookie right guard Tate Ratledge asked for Thanksgiving off.

Lions fans miss the joke on Tate Ratledge and Thanksgiving

The absurdity of it all really should have clued people in. The article says that Ratledge said “I know we have a game scheduled, but my family has this big tradition every year where we all get together on that day and have a feast and watch football, and I really don’t want to miss it,” said the 24-year-old guard, adding that he’s very excited to spend time with his cousins and have a few helpings of his grandma’s famous stuffing. “I’ve already had to cancel a lot of weekend plans because of games this season, so I’m hoping I don’t have to back out on this, too. Plus, my mom said she’s making pecan pie just for me—it’s my favorite.”

Normally, you would think this wouldn’t be a problem, but then a bunch of people freaked out on the internet because they maybe just didn’t know what The Onion was, or maybe they’ve never heard of satire. Somehow, this found its way back to Ratledge and the Lions themselves.

Well, tell your crazy uncle, who also believed all the crazy Lions A.I. Slop he saw on Facebook, that, along with that stuff, this one isn’t real. It’s a joke. No need to call into 97.1 The Ticket to yell about it.
