The stage is now completely set for Week 18. Sunday Night Football will be the spot where the 14-2 Detroit Lions go up against the 14-2 Minnesota Vikings for a shot at the first seed in the NFL Playoffs and the NFC North crown. This is everything that you watch football for.
If you have a ticket to this game, you have a ticket to what could be the biggest regular season game any Detroit sports team has ever played. This is why some Lions fans who have those tickets could make the biggest mistake of their lives by selling them to make some money.
Let me start off by saying this. If you're in a tight space or a jam and you need the money to keep the power on at your house and feed your kids, sell the tickets. I don't know why you irresponsibly had these expensive tickets in the first place, but make your money and take care of your life. That's literally the only reason you should have to sell.
Look, life is short, and memories are all we're going to have at the end of the day. Money is cool, but you can't take it with you to wherever we're going after this. Years ago, before I started doing this job, I got to sit in Ford Field as a fan, and I saw Calvin Johnson go off for 397 yards. I also got to see Matthew Stafford do the infamous Stafford sneak for the win over the Cowboys.
A couple of weeks before that, I got fired from my job at Lowe's, where I had worked for nearly a decade. I was unemployed, and I could have used the money. We didn't sell the tickets and we still went, and I wouldn't trade the memories of that day for anything. It was one of the greatest days of my life.
I got fired weeks earlier and walked to my car in that parking lot saying to myself that I needed to find out what I was going to do with my life because I had wasted so much of it already. Then we went to that game and I walked out knowing that there was nothing in this world that I could hyperfocus on more than this Lions team. I had to do something involving the Lions for a living. I went to college to study journalism, so why not pair those two things together?
The point is you never know. Maybe you just go to the greatest game of all time and that's good enough. That's something that you will remember your entire life. A chance to see the Lions win the NFC North in their own building and celebrate that. I mean come on.
But maybe there's more. Maybe you meet your spouse at the game. Maybe you win the 50/50 raffle or maybe you just have an amazing night with family or friends and it's one you always talk about. Don't trade memories for money.
Also, if you're someone that buys up a bunch of tickets for the sole purpose of selling them way too high to those who want the memories, please consider swallowing a fork. Lastly, don't sell these tickets to Vikings fans.
