The Detroit Lions don't trust Jameson Williams on the field yet

After the Detroit Lions loss to the Balitmore Ravens on Sunday I got on here and wondered if it was time to start wondering about Jameson Williams. After all, Williams had been back for three weeks at that point and the Lions just hadn't thrown him out there a ton. On top of that, he got a few shots in Baltimore and he dropped all of them.

On Friday we got a glimpse into things when Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson spoke with media and admitted that things just aren't where they want them to be with Williams just yet.

“Time on task still. I know it’s beating a dead horse by saying that, but some guys take longer than others to develop a rapport with. We frankly aren’t there yet.”

It's understandable to a point. Williams just hasn't had the time to build chemistry with Johnson, Jared Goff and the Lions. It's also fair to say that the time he has had hasn't been good enough to build up a trust and that reflects in his usage on game day.

Williams seems to be aware of that as well. He's been spending extra time with Jared Goff at and after practices since he's come back and they're trying to find that rhythm together.

"We've got a good rapport in that way, but…it's just so early in his career and his development that it's just reps, it's just reps," Jared Goff told the Detroit News Thursday. "It's just time and it's a matter of time before everything starts to click for him in our offense."

How long will it take for that trust to start happening and for the Lions to start throwing Williams out there more? It's hard to say at this point. With Marvin Jones leaving the team this week, that should open up about 20 more snaps per game. Perhaps Williams will get worked into the pass game a little more and it will be a trial by fire.

The best way for Williams to really make sure that he can get that time on task and see the field more is that he needs to capitalize on the opportunities he gets. On Sunday he got six targets and missed them all. That's just a good way to get looked off when it comes time to see the field.

The good thing now, and what has always been the good thing with Williams, is that he knows what he needs to do.

"Six targets, no catches. I don't know, I'm just focused on the team and how we played. My performance…it can get better for sure. It's gotta get better."

Here's hoping that it can get better and Williams can flourish like the kid deserves to flourish. I think he can do it at the end of the day. I just need to see it though.

Lions injury updates: Frank Ragnow misses second straight practice

The Detroit Lions held their second practice on Friday afternoon ahead of their Monday Night Football matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders. On Thursday they got some good news with the returns of Jerry Jacobs and Kerby Joseph. Let's see if there's any good news to report today.  Jonah Jackson Jackson has been out since […]
