Things turned around really fast for the Detroit Lions. In less than 20 minutes, the Lions lost their number one corner in Carlton Davis and then arguably replaced him with a better one in D.J. Reed.
The former fifth-round pick has been really good for the Jets in the last few years. He's allowed an average reception percentage of 58.7%. Last year he allowed 58.3% and had seven pass breakups. Reed is the CB1 on day one and this allows the Lions to move Amik Robertson back to the slot.
The Lions aren't getting a ball hawk here, but they are getting a guy who quarterbacks attacked a lot to stay away from Sauce Gardner and he still was able to put up impressive numbers. He was targeted 60 times last year and only allowed 35 receptions for two touchdowns.
This is a also a steal of a contract for Reed. Davis just got $60 million over the same amount of years and Reed has arguably been better than Davis. He comes in a little over the projected $45 million deal he was expected to get, but again, when you look at the trend of the market, the Lions didn't fall into the overpaying trap.
It's going to be interesting to see what else the Lions do at the position. Darius Slay is still out there and the Lions do need some depth to help out and to make sure they're much deeper than they were last year. But in terms of starters, Terrion Arnold, D.J. Reed and Amik Robertson is a very good group. Couple that with Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph in the safety spots. Lions fans should be ecstatic right now.
