Things are happening pretty fast for the Detroit Lions right now. Earlier Monday, they traded David Montgomery to the Houston Texans for a 2026 fourth-round pick, offenisve lineman Juice Scruggs, and a 2027 seventh-round pick. Now they’ve released Graham Glasgow.

Why the Lions made this move and how much they’ll save

For starters, the Lions will save $5.5 million after releasing Glasgow. At this time, we don’t know if he plans to play in 2026 for another team or if he plans to retire. What we do know is that the Lions wanted to have some clarity on his situation before the new league year on March 11th. They have that clarity now.

In our story about Scruggs, we wrote about how he shouldn’t be expected to be the Lions’ starting center in 2026, but that he was going to be a real indication that the Lions were planning to move on from Glasgow, regardless of whether he retired or not.

Scruggs gives the Lions a young player off the bench who can not only play center, but can also play left and right guard as well. Maybe they can build upon him. Maybe they can’t. The money is low risk, and there are no guarantees left on his deal. At the end of the day, this was just a financially better way to go for Detroit.

Glasgow played seven seasons for the Lions after they drafted him in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He took a short break to go to Denver before coming back and playing a major role in the Lions’ run to the NFC Championship game in 2023. He took to social media to say his goodbyes to the Lions and Detroit.
