The Lions’ most realistic free agent center option just hit the market, and they can get him right now
The Lions could solve their biggest problem before the market opens up
The Detroit Lions’ biggest need in free agency is center. They need to fill this position more than anything on the entire team. What if I told you they could solve it before free agency even opens up next week?
The Lions should just go grab Tyler Biadasz right now before he hits the market
The Washington Commanders surprisingly released Biadasz last week after what was a fairly good season. He allowed 21 pressures and three sacks. He put up a 67.1 pass block grade from Pro Football Focus, and his 71.2 run block grade was 11th in the league. That’s better than every other free agent center in the league not named Tyler Linderbaum.
Biadasz has six years as a starting center under his belt for the Commanders and the Dallas Cowboys. In 2022, he made the Pro Bowl. This is a very good player, and he fits the Lions’ needs. He can start right now, and he’s still just 28 years old. Ideally, the Lions can bring him in and have him start for the next few years, and that will give them time to build towards their next move at center. Maybe they can draft a guy like Jake Slaughter and let him cook in the oven for a little bit.
In terms of cost, he’s coming off a three-year $29.2 million deal with the Commanders. For the Lions, it could be something like a three-year deal worth $22.5 million. That’s very doable for Detroit.
Here’s the best part. They could do it today if they wanted to. When the Commanders released Biadaz, he became a free agent instantly. He can sign with any team he wants right now because he’s not under a contract that he has to wait for to expire on March 11th. Imagine the Lions being able to have their top need taken care of when the market opens up. That’s a big win.
