The Detroit Lions had one hell of a game on Saturday night didn't they? The Lions broke off a 40 burger on the Broncos and just looked dominant. What was the difference between that team and the team that played that bad game against the Bears last week? The big difference is that the Lions had their fully healthy offensive line back for the first time in a while.
That line being Taylor Decker, Jonah Jackson, Frank Ragnow, Graham Glasgow and Penei Sewell. The Lions haven't had this group in full since their game against the Chargers and it really showed. What else really shows is just how good this offense is when they do have those guys. Will Burchfield of 97.1 The Ticket broke down all the numbers and this is what he found:
- The Lions are 5-0 with this group on the field
- They average 38.4 points per game with this group
- They average 421.2 yards per game with this group
- They average 179.4 rushing yards per game with this group
- That's 5.5 yards per carry
- Jared Goff has a passer rating of 121.7 when this group is blocking for him.
That is insane. It is also insane how little the Lions have actually had this group with them through the season. Just five games all year long. They've gone through many other combinations as the season has gone along. If they can stay healthy for the rest of the year and the playoffs, this team could do some real damage out there. If they play like they did against the Broncos, they can beat anyone. Simple as that.
I'll add that in those five games, the Lions defense averaged 24 points a game those five games. The big reason being that they don't have to spend as much time on the field becasue the Lions offense averages 34 minutes in tome of possession in those games. They get the ball and they keep it.
For comparison sake, the Lions time of possession in their loss against the Bears was 26:41. That extra eight minutes makes a world of difference.
The Lions have a huge game in Minnesota this Sunday. They have a chance to clinch their first divsion title since 1993. Luckily they'll have this group with them in that game. We'll see what happens against a strong Vikings defense.
