The Detroit Lions needed a bounce back after an ugly loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and they got it with a 20-13 road win over the Arizona Cardinals. One of the big things to clean up from Week 2 was the red zone issues. The Lions did that. They got to the red zone twice and scored both times.
While that's cleaned up, the Lions still have two things to fix and they'd be smart to fix them as soon as possible. Here they are.
Back breaking penalties
Penalties are a part of the game and they happen. There's no way to completely rid yourself of them, but the Lions are committing the worst ones and they're doing it weekly and it's hurting them tremendously.
The Lions have had seven defensive pass interference penalties this year. The Lions defense has been very improved this year, but they need to cut down on these spot fouls. You hate to put the blame on one player, but rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold has accounted for four of those.
It's not just that either, there's been multiple roughing the passer calls too. The one on Sunday was just stupid. Jalen Reeves-Maybin dove onto a pile of guys that had already tackled Kyler Murray. It's very uncharacteristic of Reeves-Maybin, but little stuff like that needs to go away. Murray went from being short to getting an extra 15 yards and a first down.
Take advantage of turnovers
This one is slightly more concerning. The Lions have forced five turnovers this season and they did not score off of any of them. No touchdowns or even field goal. Three were from Sunday's game alone. The Lions should have won this game going away. They should have won last weeks game going away.
If the Lions can get these two things taken care of, they're going to dominate weekly. This is the kind of thing that you look for in October going forward. Shake off the rust and start balling out.
