The Detroit Lions made multiple proposals for rule changes ahead of the league meetings in April. They proposed that the league do away with automatic first downs as a result of defensive holding. That one got voted down fast.
They also proposed that the NFL change the year-round 90-man roster to 95 players after the NFL trade deadline in November. That one gained some ground at the league meetings, but was tabled and was expected to get voted on during the spring meetings. It doesn’t even appear to be on the books.
What was to be voted on was the biggest proposal the Lions had made. That was the proposal to change the way the playoffs are seeded. The initial proposal was to have playoff seeding be based on record.
A tweak was made to the proposal earlier this week, per The Athletic, in which the first round of the playoffs would remain the same, with division winners getting their home game, but the next round would feature teams being re-seeded again.
Per Mark Maske of The Washington Post, a source tells him, "I doubt it on that. Not this year."
The proposal never made it to the vote the on Wednesday. Per NFL insider Jay Batista, the Lions have withdrawn the proposal. This one is over.
That doesn't mean that it won't come up again in the future. All it really takes is for a team to get screwed out of the playoffs because a 7-9 team won its really bad division. That would change everything overnight. In 2024, there was only one team with a winning record that didn't make the playoffs, and that was the Seattle Seahawks.
